Privacy notice
How My House Day uses your information, under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Last updated: 2 November 2026.
Who we are
My House Day is run by My House Day, the "responsible party" under POPIA. Contact us about privacy at hello@myhouseday.com.
My House Day is a pilot. You can stop using it and delete your account at any time.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and your password. The password is stored only as a scrambled hash, so we can't read it.
- Your setup answers: your home's name, how many adults and children live there, your worker's first name, work days, breakfast and lunch plans, jobs, food choices and dinner choices. Children's names and ages are optional.
- Where you live: your country, province and, if you add it, your town or suburb. Never your street address. We use it to see which areas use the app, and show grocers and partners totals by area only (for example "300 families in Gauteng"). Your grocer keeps your delivery address in their own app; we never see it.
- Your WhatsApp number, if you give it, so the shopping list can be sent to you.
- The shopping list your worker ticks on their page.
- Feedback you send us.
- How the app is used: for example, on which days the worker's page was opened, when a shopping list was sent and how many items it had, which recipe or video was opened, and whether a reminder was opened. This is linked to your home, not to your worker's name.
We don't ask for ID numbers, bank details, salaries or health information. Please don't type them into My House Day.
Why we use it
- To build your family's plan and show it on your worker's page.
- To log you in, and to email you a password-reset link when you ask for one.
- To answer your feedback and improve My House Day.
- To count how the app is used, and to show grocers and partners totals only (for example "2,000 shopping lists a week"). We never share a family's own list, details or contact information with a grocer unless you choose to, in the app, at that time.
- If you choose to order your shopping list at a grocer, we send that grocer the items and amounts on the list and an anonymous code (so they can tell us which orders came from the app). We do not send your name, email, address or anything about your domestic worker. You check out and pay in the grocer's own app; we never see your card details. You can stop sharing with a grocer at any time on your dashboard.
We don't sell your information, and we don't use it for advertising.
Your worker's page
Your worker opens their page with a private link and no password. Anyone with the link can see that page: their first name, the jobs (including any names you typed into them, such as children's names for breakfast or lunch boxes), the menu and the shopping list. It also holds your WhatsApp number, so the shopping list can be sent to you. It does not show your email or your account. Only share the link with your worker. If it reaches the wrong person, make a new link on your dashboard, and the old one stops working at once.
Who else handles it
- Hosting: our server is with HostAfrica in South Africa.
- Email: password-reset emails are sent through HostAfrica.
- YouTube: recipe videos open on YouTube. YouTube's own privacy terms apply there. We don't send YouTube any of your information.
- Phone reminders: when reminders are turned on, they are delivered by the phone's own push service (Google for Android, Apple for iPhone, Mozilla or Microsoft for some browsers). The reminder text is encrypted; the service sees only that a message was delivered.
- WhatsApp or text messages: when a list or link is shared, it goes through WhatsApp or your phone's messages app, under their own terms.
- Fonts and all page files come from our own server; no other company is contacted when a page opens.
Cookies and saved copies
We use one cookie, to keep you logged in. We use no tracking or advertising cookies.
Their phone keeps a copy of the page, so it still opens without internet. The copy is replaced each time the page is opened online.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. When you delete your account on your dashboard, we delete your account, plan, worker link, shopping list, usage records and feedback straight away. We only keep a count that an account was deleted. Our daily server backups that still hold a copy are deleted after 14 days. Our hosting provider may also keep short-term copies of the whole server for its own recovery.
Your rights
You can ask what information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to how we use it. You can change your answers yourself under "Change answers", and delete everything under "Delete my account". For anything else, email hello@myhouseday.com.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa): inforegulator.org.za.
Security
Pages are sent over HTTPS only, passwords and log-in codes are stored scrambled (hashed), the private worker links are long random codes, and the data and backups on the server can be read only by the app. If we ever learn that your information was accessed without permission, we will tell you and the Information Regulator, as POPIA requires.
